Only six miles from Stevenage but in a lovely village setting at Ardeley, The Rabbit's Foot is a good-looking real-ale pub which now includes a stunning beamed restaurant serving good country food with a twist or two. Rabbit indeed features, slow braised in mustard, white wine and cream and served with buttered barley, so it's quite rich but just the thing for a winter evening. Sausage cassoulet and chicken and leek steamed pudding also went down well with my group, all accompanied by attentive service. Chocolate and blackberry bread and butter pudding is one star of the dessert menu. There are typically six starters, 10 main courses and four desserts and quality is good - all hen and quail eggs, rabbit and venison come from the village. Backed up by an adequate wine list, we had a good time in front of one of the cheerful open fires and prices are reasonable. We shall return.
