My boyfriend and I have been to The Watergates on a number of occasions as it is a great place go if you're looking for good quality, fresh food at affordable prices.

We would recommend taking advantage of their "2 for £10" offer which is fantastic value.

The first time we visited (over a year ago) we both had medium rare rump steak and it was really lovely, pink in the middle and fresh. Not massive portions, but more than enough for us, for just £5 each. Unfortunately, it as since disappeared from the menu!

Another classic is the fish and chips with either mushy or garden peas. The chips and peas are standard for a pub, but the fish is always fresh and the batter is lovely, thin and crispy.

The only criticism is that it is not a family friendly pub. It is more for groups of friends and couples because it is quite dark (below ground level) and I think it has a 'no children' policy.

Also, because it is such excellent value for money and good quality food, it is often very busy so be prepared to be turned away at peak lunch hour!

I had the stuffed chicken breast, which was a little crispy at the ends but very nice. My girlfriend had the beef burger without the bap (wheat-free), and it was the best burger either of us have ever tasted. Fantastic!

Menu Choice

Pretty decent menu, plenty of things we would have liked. Shame the specials were on the back page of the menu, we missed them!

Service

We had to wait half an hour for our food, they seemed a little rushed off their feet, considering everywhere else in Chester was packed out on a saturday lunchtime though, the wait was acceptable, especially given the quality of the food! Staff were particularly concerned with if everything was ok, which was a nice change!

Little close packed inside, it has a funky crypt/church like ceiling, on a lower level of several of Chesters old buildings.

After several misses, we've finally found a great place to eat in Chester, and will definitely be revisiting Watergates.
